Kazuoko Kombu (herring roe on kelp) is a natural delicacy made from Pacific herring eggs laid directly on kelp in the wild, which are then carefully salted. Herring roe (Kazunoko) has long been celebrated as a symbol of prosperity and fertility due to its abundance, while kelp (Kombu) is cherished as a bringer of good fortune—making both essential elements of celebratory feasts and New Year's cuisine.
Beyond their cultural significance, both offer rich health benefits: herring roe is packed with high-quality protein, while kelp provides essential minerals such as calcium and iron. Enjoy the delightful crunchy texture, rich ocean aroma, and exquisite taste of nature’s bounty. (Product of North America) (Prices listed in CAN$)
*Store in the refrigerator. Unopened, it can be kept for 5 to 6 months. Even after opening, as long as it has not been desalted, it will last for 2 to 3 months if kept fully submerged in a concentrated saltwater solution. Once desalted, please consume as soon as possible.
= Recommended Desalting Method =
1 teaspoon of salt in 1 liter of water and soak the herring roe. After about 2 hours, replace with fresh saltwater mixed at the same ratio. Repeat this process 3 to 4 times. *Note: Using plain water to desalt will only remove surface salt and result in a bitter taste, so please be sure to use saltwater.
